Acad Runs on Dunkin’

In recent months, coffee and donut chain Dunkin’ Donuts has become increasingly popular among American teenagers, including Athens Academy students. Much of Dunkin’s rising popularity can be attributed to a social media app called TikTok, a platform where creators make short videos centered around things such as dancing, comedy, lifestyle tips, and acting.

Sixteen-year-old Charli D’Amelio is arguably the most popular video creator on the app. While most of her content consists of dancing videos, over the summer, she made many vlog videos on TikTok in which she went to Dunkin’ Donuts almost daily. D’Amelio’s influence has inspired hordes of fans to try Dunkin’ coffee and breakfast food, to the point that D’Amelio formed a partnership with the company and made a drink known as “the Charli” -- a cold brew coffee with whole milk and three pumps of caramel.

Some Athens Academy students in the class of 2022, such as Alexis Keeney, Annie Cross, and Steven Holder, have participated in the rising Dunkin’ trend, and have developed a strong liking for their drinks and food.

Keeney and Cross have both tried D’Amelio’s new drink. Neither, however, was a fan of their coffee order. Keeney said, “It’s much stronger than what I usually order,” and Annie believes that she simply got a “bad batch” when she tried it.

Like many people who frequent Dunkin’ Donuts, Cross and Keeney usually both order iced coffees. Cross’s go-to is a “medium iced coffee with vanilla, cream, and sugar,”and Keeney is partial to a “medium iced coffee with mocha, cream, and sugar.”

Although Keeney has found great coffee orders at Dunkin’, she did not enjoy their iced caramel macchiato and found it to be “very bitter for Dunkin’.”

The two girls agree that they love the coffee prices at Dunkin’ Donuts; both stated that it was “much cheaper” than Starbucks. Crossalso commented that she “loves the taste” of the coffee at Dunkin’, but Alexis prefers the coffee at Starbucks because it has more of a “real coffee taste.”

Keeney, Cross, and Holder all have go-to food orders when they go to Dunkin’. Holder usually buys a chocolate cake donut, Cross likes Dunkin’s bagel bites with cream cheese, and Keeney usually goes for the “Munchkins,” which are the donut holes at Dunkin’ Donuts.

Overall, it is clear that Dunkin’ is a generally convenient fast food chain for many high school students due to its low prices, great variety in their menu, and great-tasting options.
