William Story's College Football Predictions, Week 1

Image: Prime Sports Network

After an exciting week 0, including a high scoring affair in Fort Collins to finish the weekend off, I think everyone is excited for week 1. There are a lot of good games week 1, including the marquee matchups Washington-Auburn and Alabama Louisville. There are a few games that I think have been underrated including the Maryland Texas game, and the Ohio State- Oregon State game. That being said here are my predictions for the week: (All of these games are being picked based on the spread, provided by oddshark.)

Safe Picks

Oregon State vs. Ohio State (-37)

Take the Beavers and run with them. 37 points would be a large margin of victory against any opponent let alone against a solid team that is on the rise in the PAC-12. Given the circumstances in Columbus at the moment, I think you are missing out if you don’t take the Beavers against this massive spread.

Texas vs Maryland (+13)

Given the horrific player accounts of the coaching staff for the Terps, I picked this as an interesting game to look out for this weekend. The second of a home and home series, Maryland had a massive upset, but this is a much different Terps team. Losing DJ Moore could prove to be a massive loss and they will struggle on all sides of the ball. Texas is a very safe pick this week to cover.

Miami FL vs LSU neutral site (+2.5)

AT&T Stadium plays host to another very interesting college game, this time on a Sunday. I think that Miami is a very solid team that matches up perfectly for LSU. Miami is a very fast team on both sides, and I think Deejay Dallas is a player to keep an eye out for this year. LSU has historically struggled offensively, especially in the QB position, and Miami will capitalize on this. I wouldn’t be shocked to see the turnover chain out in the first quarter, and out often for the Canes. This is a pretty safe pick as the Canes have loads of talent, feel confident with the 2.5 line, and take the under if possible.

West Virginia vs Tennessee neutral site (+10)

Another solid neutral site game, this one coming in Charlotte with two solid teams. I am very excited to see Will Grier, who many think of as a Heisman contender, face a solid defense in the Vols. I mark this as a safe bet for the Mountaineers to score and score often, en route to covering the score, pretty easily too. The vols will not bounce back this year but don’t expect the Mountaineers to be a playoff threat either.

Slight Risks

Wash vs Auburn neutral (-2.5)

In a very exciting week one matchup I think this could be a huge game for Auburn. In week 2 Auburn will host an FBS team, but week 3 will feature a visit from the LSU tigers, which could have serious implications in a September matchup. I think Jake Browning and Myles Gaskin is a very solid duo that could make a lot of noise this year. Take Washington and feel pretty solid with your pick as Auburn is 0-2 in the Benz.

Alabama vs Louisville neutral site (+25.5)

The sole reason for to make this a slight risk is that 26 is 4 possessions. A 4 possession win in week 1 against a decent opponent is a lot to ask for, even from the game’s greatest. Alabama is the real deal, but Louisville isn’t Vanderbilt. This game will never be close but Saban won’t run it up too badly. Don’t be too worried about taking the cards and the points.

Michigan vs Notre Dame (+1)

I think ND will surprise a lot of people this year and week 1 will be the start of it all. Michigan still has a lot of question marks heading into September 1, the biggest of which being starting QB Shea Patterson. I think the ND offense with Brandon Wimbush and a trio of running backs will put up solid numbers. Take the Irish and the under.

Hot Takes

UMass vs Boston College (-18)

This is a game that caught my attention from the get go. UMass is, in my opinion, the most underrated group of 5 team in the nation. After a near upset last year against Tennessee in Knoxville, I think UMass is poised for another power 5 scare. With the matchup against BC, a team that will rely heavily on standout RB AJ Dillon, I think that this is a logical pick. Don’t be surprised to see BC fail to cover this week.

Wyoming vs Washington State (-3)

This is a game that also caught my eye after Wyoming’s solid week 0 performance on National TV. Although this is a Wyoming team without Josh Allen, I think this defense is the best group of 5 defense in the nation. Stout up front and stingy in the secondary, I think that Mike Leach’s bunch could be in for a rude awakening week 1. This is a bit of a stretch but don’t be surprised to see Wyoming walk out 2-0.
