One of Athens’ favorite nights, Dancing with the Athens Stars is a fundraising event hosted by Project Safe, an agency dedicated to eradicating domestic violence. Each team is comprised of a well-regarded “star” in the community matched with a dance instructor, and this year’s participants include Athens Academy eighth grader Mary Frances Massey! Because a recent soccer-related injury will prevent Mary Frances from performing her choreographed routine, instead she will be speaking onstage about her experience as a star.
Prior to the event, you can nominate Mary Frances and her teammate, Oonagh Benson from the Drake School of Irish Dance, for the community favorite by donating to Project Safe. In addition to community favorite, the teams will compete for audience favorite (based on ticket sales) and judges’ favorite (based on dancing). Tickets are $21 in advance (online) and $26 at the door, and money raised by the teams as well as all ticket sales go directly to Project Safe.
I encourage you to attend Dancing with the Athens Stars at the Classic Center on Saturday, April 21st; the event starts at 7:30 p.m. The atmosphere is fun (with some friendly competition mixed in, of course), the performers are impressive―especially considering half of them have never danced professionally!―and Project Safe’s cause is certainly a worthy one. I hope to see you there!
